Anti Bullying Programs – Working To Stamp Out Bullying In Schools
By Mandy-Jane Clarke
In order to effectively stamp out bullying in schools, there has to be anti bullying programs put into place at the outset. Administrators need to set an agenda for each school year which outlines student behavior, what is expected, and what will be unacceptable.
Workshops and consistent discussion on bullying should be included in the curriculum very early on in elementary schools. The children should be taught to expose bullies, what to do in situations when they are being bullied, and guidance in determining the difference between bullying and child’s play.
Parents must also become part of the anti bullying program by teaching their children to behave in school, inquire about the school’s anti bullying programs, and organize groups of parents to confront, discuss, and find new methods to deal with this problem.
Children must be empowered to thwart any attempt by anyone to bully them, either by verbal or physical encroachment. If they witness another student being bullied, they must be taught to report them immediately to their supervisor. In addition, no matter what school a child attends, there is ongoing bullying. To assume otherwise would be a mistake. Bullying is a pandemic in this country, and it is up to the parents, teachers, administrators, and students to attack the problem head on using every resource available.
Anti bullying programs can only be effective through campaigns and awareness. Actively participating in these programs can achieve great results. These programs can teach students how to stand up for themselves and not become socially ostracized by their peers. Programs can teach parents how to have discussions with their children as early as elementary school level, and provide answers to questions they may have as well as inform them what bullying may entail so they can fully understand when and if they are victims of bullying.
Anti bullying programs for teachers can be of tremendous help in identifying those who have problems which can potentially create a bullying situation. School Aides can offer input into those students who cause problems in lunchrooms and schoolyards, hallways and bathrooms. It is these school aides who are around kids the most, especially in between classes, therefore they know before teachers if any potential threat may occur.
In fact, most students become friendly with these aides and also offer information if a situation is about to occur.
Anti bullying programs are vital in keeping safety issues to a minimum. While every school will handle bullying differently, and while each school will initiate antibullying procedures according to their perception of what needs to be done, the overall threat of bullying has to be handled so that it doesn’t advance into violence or injury to another student. Although each school is required to have a Comprehensive Education Plan, perhaps it would be appropriate to add anti bullying programs to the action plan as well.
