Bully Boy Tactics Run The Gamut From Specific Verbal Abuse To Physical Violence
By Mandy-Jane Clarke
Bully boy tactics run the gamut from specific verbal abuse to physical violence. The bully boys’ main goal is to dominate others, revel in the power bullying represents and control others by words or actions. They become arrogant and belligerent, feel satisfaction when they see other boys cower in fear, tend to blame others, are consistently angry, show a distinct pattern of hostility and aggressive behavior, usually come from another school where they were involved in violent incidents, and above all – have apathetic feelings towards others.
Bullying prevention programs have worked in places such as London, Norway, New Zealand and Canada. These programs must be developed in the U.S. public school system in order to achieve awareness among all individuals in a school setting. There has to be a way to assess boys who have potential to bully before they enter the school system, before they prey on others, and to ensure that bullying is recognized and dealt with in a timely and serious manner.
It is also important to educate all staff members in public schools in the understanding of bullying and the devastating effects it can have on children. The community of psychologists and psychiatrists must also be involved in assessing these boys who bully, and offer counseling where needed. In addition, bully boy tactics must be well delineated in teacher workshops across the public school system so that everyone can recognize the signs. Attention should be given to boys who enter a new school and seem to immediately display characteristics associated with boys who bully.
Bully boy tactics are reinvented every day in schools. Boys who bully have a large group base which they can use to keep tabs on their victims by using their members to intimidate and frighten. They are more prone to carry weapons in middle schools, which will eventually progress to drugs and more violent behavior in high school.
Boys who bully must not be allowed to wreak havoc in middle schools. It is incumbent upon the Department of Education, parents, teachers, guidance counselors and support staff to address the problem by developing a system in which boys who bully are immediately identified as potential troublemakers.
Bully boy tactics in schools lead to more aggressive behavior. Reports occur as we speak, of knives and other weapons being brought into middle schools in an effort to further harass and frighten victims. While most high schools have metal detectors to prevent weapons from entering the premises, most middle schools do not. This is not only a major oversight in the educational system, but considering that a typical middle school with a population of 900 kids only has two or three security guards, it proves just how vulnerable kids are.
The answer to bully boy tactics is bullying prevention. There is no need for additional data to be collected. The problem is clear and ongoing, and must be arrested if our children are to receive a quality education without fear of going to school.
