Girl Aggression and Girl Violence – How a Girl Bully Will Hone In On Her Victim
By Mandy-Jane Clarke
Girl aggression and girl violence is prevalent in elementary, middle and high schools. However, statistics show middle schools seem to be the center of activity for girls bullying other girls.
Here are some facts on how a girl bully will hone in on her victim. Firstly, the girls’ bathroom is statistically the central area where most harassment of girls occurs.
Secondly, school yard recess allows a girl bully and her group to approach a victim and subtly but firmly abuse the victim verbally by demeaning her in front of her friends.
Thirdly, after-school fighting occurs as a result of girls bullying other girls throughout the school day. In some cases, a message will be passed around indicating that the intended victim will be a target of girl aggression and girl violence. While administrators may be warned of the situation, once these girls are away from the school perimeter nothing can be done.
An incident, witnessed by a school staff member, where twenty-five or more girls accompanied the girl bully to a specific location off school premises, was frightening. The girl bully knew the route the intended victim would take on her way home. Two blocks from the school, the victim was confronted by the girl bully. Although the victim had a few friends with her, she was obviously outnumbered. The girl bully and the victim exchanged words. Then all hell broke loose. The girl aggression and girl violence began without anyone trying to stop it. Boys came to watch and cheered the girl bully on. Was this reported to school officials? Yes. The next morning the parents of the victim filed a complaint. Was the girl bully called in for questioning? Yes. Were statements taken by those in attendance? Yes. Was the girl bully suspended? No. Why? The statements claimed that the victim was the instigator of the fight, and everyone in the girl bully’s entourage supported that statement.
As a result of girl aggression and girl violence that day, other girls in the school became fearful. Some remained at home the day after the incident, while others asked to be transferred to another school. This is public education at its worst. Leaving victims helpless, hopeless, and increasingly diminished in their capacity to learn are the consistent results of an incident of this kind.
Conversely, the girl bully gained admiration and respect from her peers, and was essentially given a free pass to continue her reign of terror. Incidents of girls bullying other girls have increased in middle schools, as evidenced by the girl bullying statistics. It’s time to stop this cycle of violence and to once and for all implement severe consequences commensurate with severe actions. A message needs to be sent to all girls bullying other girls that this type of behavior will no longer be tolerated or accepted. A case must be made for mandatory expulsion when dealing with girl aggression and girl violence.
